A Syrian asylum seeker suddenly attacked passersby in Villach, killing a teenager and injuring five others. Austria’s interior minister said the perpetrator was linked to the so-called “Islamic State” group.
It is thought that the suspect became radicalized online.
According to Austria’s interior minister, the attacker who used a knife in the city of Villach was radicalized online and had ties to the so-called “Islamic State” organization.
“Islamist attacker,” Interior Minister Gerhard Karner declared on Sunday, referring to the Syrian suspect who began indiscriminately slashing at onlookers with a knife on Saturday. A teenager was killed in the attack, and five others were injured.
Karner told reporters, “It is an Islamist attack with IS connections,” and that the suspect became radicalized online “in a short space of time.”
He expressed his “anger about an Islamist attacker who indiscriminately stabbed innocent people here in this city,” Interior Minister Karner said on Sunday.
According to police, the suspect targeted bystanders with a folding knife. Shortly after the attack, he was arrested after being stopped by a fellow Syrian, a food delivery driver, who rammed him with his vehicle.
“This shows how closely terrorist evil but also human good can be united in one and the same nationality,” he said.
According to police, the suspect has a valid residency permit and no criminal history, despite being an asylum seeker.
