Long way to go in LaLiga title race, says Barcelona’s Flick

With a long way to go in the race for the title, Barcelona’s coach Hansi Flick stated on Sunday that the team is more concerned with putting on solid performances than with the La Liga standings.

After both of their primary rivals lost points on Saturday, Barcelona will have the chance to reclaim the top spot when they play sixth-place Rayo Vallecano at the Olympic Stadium on Monday.

Atletico Madrid lost to Celta Vigo 1-1 at home, while leaders Real Madrid drew 1-1 at Osasuna.

With a game remaining and a better goal differential, Real Madrid leads Atletico with 51 points from 24 games, while Barcelona is in third place with 48.

“The standings are not necessary for us to view. “A strong performance is what we want to demonstrate, but there is still a long way to go,” Flick told reporters.

“I feel like the team is enjoying itself and is becoming more and more confident in its abilities. That is the most crucial factor.

“I get the impression that the players want to demonstrate their team identity and mindset. That is fantastic for the coaches, too. We are determined to keep getting better, and I believe we are doing just that,” the German continued.

Barca is currently on an 11-game winning streak across all competitions after struggling in La Liga late last year while missing 17-year-old winger Lamine Yamal due to injury.

However, Flick is cautious of Inigo Rayo, who have won nine straight La Liga games.

“I was informed that Rayo was a courageous team when I got there. That is what I have always heard. They are producing excellent results, and their coach, Idigo Perez, is amazing,” Flick remarked.

“Our team is my top priority and what matters most to me. That is our strongest suit. I am aware that gaining confidence is crucial and that the environment should take the lead.

“However, we must first play 90 solid minutes and win.”

The Catalan side have been boosted by the return from injury of Urruguayan defender Ronald Araujo.
