The two leaders will be talking directly for the first time since the United States raised additional tariffs on imports from India to 50 percent.
Trump posted on social media on Tuesday, “I am pleased to announce that India, and the United States of America, are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two Nations.”
The Trump administration raised extra tariffs on Indian imports last month, citing India’s purchase of crude oil and oil products from Russia, which is continuing its offensive in Ukraine.
Modi visited China from late August through early this month to attend a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The international framework is led by China and Russia.
During his visit, which was his first in seven years, Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump added, “I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries!”
It remains to be seen whether the talks between Trump and Modi will help stabilize bilateral relations.
