Germany: Football games under match-fixing investigation

0

Investigations into allegations of match-fixing in 17 lower-league football games are being conducted by authorities in several German states. The manipulation is reported to have taken place in connection with online betting firms. The newspaper Hamburger Morgenpost revealed on Friday that message logs described the apparent sale of information about up to 17 games, from regionalized fifth-tier competitions to the third division, on the “dark web.”

The newspaper didn’t publish the messages and didn’t identify any games or teams, but said some games included refereeing mistakes or unusual goals.

In an email statement, police in the southwestern state of Saarland stated that they were looking into a single game that happened there.

The investigation, according to prosecutors in Saarbrücken, the state capital, was prompted by information regarding possible manipulation of lower-league games throughout Germany, “presumably for the purpose of facilitating sports betting fraud.” Citing the need to preserve the ongoing investigation, the prosecutors’ office declined to identify the in question game.

Police in the central German state of Hesse told German news agency dpa that they were examining two games which took place there.

The German soccer federation said in an emailed statement that it was in contact with the authorities regarding possible match-fixing but did not yet have “robust information” about specific cases.
