Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, has emphasized that he will only sign a peace agreement if it ensures Ukraine’s security following the conclusion of hostilities with Russia.
Zelenskyy stated that a peace deal is “90 percent ready” but that a crucial 10 percent is still needed in a televised New Year’s speech on Wednesday..He said cooperation from the international community, including the United States and Europe, is indispensable for a final agreement to be reached.
Zelenskyy renewed his criticism of Russia, saying the country does not want to end the conflict on its own.
He said signing “weak agreements” would only fuel the conflict, and that his signature will only be under a “strong agreement.”
The remark comes as a post-conflict security guarantee for Ukraine has become a key factor in peace negotiations involving US and other envoys.
Zelenskyy stated that he believes Russia poses a threat to Europe as well, citing Ukraine as “the only shield that now separates Europe’s comfortable way of life from the Russia world.””
