Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says peace talks involving delegations from his country, Russia and the United States have been constructive.
The first trilateral talks began on Friday in the United Arab Emirates’ capital, Abu Dhabi, and lasted for two days.
The representatives are believed to have discussed territorial issues, including control of eastern regions of Ukraine. However, Kyiv and Moscow remain far apart on the issue.
Zelenskyy posted on social media on Saturday that “the central focus of the discussions was the possible parameters for ending the war.”
He also wrote, “The American side raised the issue of potential formats for formalizing the parameters for ending the war, as well as the security conditions required to achieve this.”
He noted that all sides agreed to report back to their capitals on each aspect of the negotiations and to coordinate further steps with their leaders.
Zelenskyy suggested that further meetings could take place, possibly as early as next week.
Meanwhile, Russia’s state-run Tass news agency quoted a source as saying “It cannot be said that there are no results.” The source said trilateral talks on Ukraine in Abu Dhabi may continue in the coming days.
However, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov said on Friday that Russia would continue its “special military operation” unless its demands are met, including territorial and other concessions by Ukraine.
