West Ham forward Michail Antoniois in a stable condition in hospital following a road traffic accident and is “conscious and communicating”, the club said in a statement.
The footballer is “currently under close supervision at a central London hospital”, the club said, while asking for people to respect his privacy “at this difficult time”.
“The club will make no further comment this evening, but will issue a further update in due course,” the statement concluded.
The Premier League club earlier confirmed that he had been in a car accident, saying their “thoughts and prayers” are with the 34-year-old.
Essex Fire Service also confirmed firefighters had attended the scene and released a man trapped in his car.
