Axios on Saturday quoted a US official and two additional sources with knowledge as saying there has been no direct contact between Washington and Tehran in recent days, although Egypt, Qatar and Britain have all passed messages between the two sides.
Egypt and Qatar have reportedly informed the US and Israel that Iran is interested in negotiating, but with very tough terms, including compensation and guarantees that the war will not resume in the future.
Axios quotes a US official as saying Washington wants Tehran to make six commitments.
The report says the first three commitments are no missile program for five years, zero uranium enrichment, and decommissioning nuclear facilities at Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow in central Iran that the US and Israel bombed last year.
A fourth commitment is strict outside observation protocols around the creation and use of centrifuges and related machinery that could advance a nuclear weapons program.
A fifth commitment is arms control treaties with regional countries that include a missile cap no higher than 1,000.
A sixth commitment is no financing for proxies such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen or Hamas in Gaza.
The report also quotes US officials as saying Trump advisers see Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as a “fax machine” rather than someone who is empowered to actually deliver a deal.
It adds that the advisers are trying to figure out who actually makes decisions in Iran and how to get in touch with them
