He was found a short time later and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and dangerous driving. He remains in police custody.Derbyshire police have said seven people were seriously hurt in the collision but none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

They said: “We can confirm that seven people were injured when a car was driven into pedestrians in a city centre street. The car, a black Suzuki Swift, struck a number of people in Friar Gate at about 9.30pm on Saturday 28 March.

“Seven people were treated at the scene by ambulance crews and taken to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

“The seven suffered a range of serious but not life-threatening injuries and we can confirm that contrary to online speculation, no one died in the incident.”

A car has ploughed into pedestrians in Derby city centre leaving multiple people injured and several fighting for their lives.

Here’s what we know so far.

Police said an incident involving a black Suzuki Swift happened in Derby city centre, in the Friar Gate area of the city, at around 9.30pm on Saturday night.
The driver, a man in his 30s, has been arrested by Derbyshire Constabulary and is in police custody.
Police said “multiple pedestrians” were struck and some people were left with serious injuries. They were treated at the scene before they were rushed to hospital.
One eye-witness said it was “absolute carnage” as multiple people were laying in the road and on the pavement after the shocking incident. They said: “It was utterly horrific. People were laying on the pavement covered in blood and on the road.”
Police have urged members of the public who “saw a black Suzuki Swift being driven in Derby around the time of the incident” to come forward and the force they it believes there is no ongoing risk to the public.

City MP speaks of ‘deep shock’
Derby North MP Catherine Atkinson said she was “deeply shocked” by reports of the casualties.

Posting on Facebook, she said: “My thoughts are with those injured and I’m grateful to our emergency services. “Please follow police advice and avoid the area. Anyone who has information should contact them as soon as possible.”

City has been left reeling after horror attack, local says
One local said: “We came outside because someone said a load of people had been hit by a car.

“Everyone was talking about it and panicking, we know people who were in other bars and thought it might have been them.”

The person, who wished to remain anonymous, was in a nearby bar when chaos began to unfolded.

They added that the city is reeling after tonight’s horror events: “It’s so sad, everyone is so shook up. People have been crying, I just can’t believe something like this has happened.”

“It’s just gone midnight in Derby city centre a time when it should be filled with students and locals enjoying the nightlife, well, tonight a corner of it has fallen silent,” he said.

What is usually one of Derby’s busiest streets is now eerily quiet, with debris still left scattered across the road as locals try to come to terms with what has unfolded just so close to home.

Witness describes ‘screaming and yelling’
One eye-witness said: “We were walking down the street when it happened. There was screaming and yelling. It was horrendous.

“It’s sickening. People were being treated all over the pavement and the road. God knows how that has happened.”

One eye-witness said it was “absolute carnage” with numerous people laying in the road and on the pavement after it happened. They said: “It was utterly horrific. People were laying on the pavement covered in blood and on the road.”

A police spokesperson for Derbyshire Constabulary said: “A man has been arrested after multiple pedestrians were struck by a car in Derby city centre.

“The incident involved a black Suzuki Swift and happened in Friar Gate at about 9.30pm today. A number of people were injured, some of them seriously, and were treated at the scene by ambulance crews before being taken to hospital.

“Police officers stopped a vehicle believed to have been involved in the incident shortly after it happened. The driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested and is in police custody.

“Our investigation is in its early stages but we want to hear from anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift being driven in Derby around the time of the incident.”

They confirmed Friar Gate is completely closed from the junction with Curzon Street/Cheapside up to Ford Street. The road will be closed for a considerable time so please avoid the area completely.

They added: “Although we know this will be alarming, we would like to reassure people that we do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the public. No further information is available at this stage but we will post an update as soon as we have one.
