Unions launch a nationwide general strike to protest sweeping budget cuts. Testing the new French prime minister’s resolve amid warnings of unrest and mass disruptionIn a first since the 2023 pension reform, all trade unions have called for a general strike.

The walkout is set to cause disruption to public education, air and rail transport, road transport, the electricity sector, the waste collection system, and public media.

“If savings are needed, the government should start by ending tax handouts to the wealthiest,” Denis Bréant, a member of the Federal Bureau of Metalworkers at the General Confederation of Labour (CGT), told Euractiv, denouncing the “€211 billion in public aid” granted to private companies.The Prime Minister did not provide any clear answers to the expectations of workers. It’s a missed opportunity,” said trade union CFDT leader Marylise Léon, speaking on behalf of the inter-union coalition.
