The UK terrorism threat level has been raised to “severe” in the wake of the Golders Green stabbings, meaning a terror attack is “highly likely”.
The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre announced the decision on Thursday, a day after two Jewish men were stabbed in north London and in the wake of several attacks in Jewish neighbourhoods in recent weeks.
The body, which is based in MI5 but makes independent assessments, previously set the threat level at “substantial”, meaning an attack was “likely”.
Head of counter terrorism policing, Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, said that police will be reviewing “all events across the country” as a result.
Speaking outside Scotland Yard, he said: “As part of our review into the change in the threat level, policing will be reviewing all events across the country.
Golders Green the day after the attack
The public have been told to “be alert, but not alarmed” after the terror threat level was raised to “severe” following the stabbing of two Jewish men in north London.
Counter-terrorism policing chief Laurence Taylor called on people to remain vigilant after what he described as “an elevated threat to Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions in the UK” after the attack in Golders Green.
My teams will be working with forces to ensure that we have appropriate protective security measures in place, that the appropriate mitigations are put in place, and we will be engaged with communities who will be affected by large events, as well as those involved in the events, so that we can keep them safe as they can be.”
In a statement confirming the decision, Taylor said: “The UK has been experiencing a gradual increase in terrorist threats for some time, driven by a rise in both Islamist and Extreme Right-Wing terrorism.
“Our casework is increasing across a number of ideologies and within that we are seeing an elevated threat to Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions in the UK.
“We are also working against an unpredictable global situation that has consequences closer to home, including physical threats by state-linked actors.
“Following yesterday’s horrific terrorist attack, and incidents targeting the Jewish community across the country, there is already an enhanced police response in place, and all police forces will be reviewing this in light of the change in threat level. “
It comes as police confirmed the suspect in Wednesday’s attack had previously been reported to Prevent, the Government’s anti-extremism programme, and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was heckled during a visit to the scene on Thursday.
