US President Donald Trump said he is stepping up pressure on Ukraine and Russia to get them to agree to a peace plan. His remarks came after a large Russian strike on Kyiv.
During talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store at the White House on Thursday, Trump said he had his own “deadline” for ceasefire negotiations, and urged both sides to accept the US proposal.
He said: “We are thinking that…very strongly that they both want peace, but they have to get to the table. We’re waiting a long time. They have to get them to the table. And I think we’re going to get peace.”
The Russian assault overnight, involving missiles and drones, left 12 people dead and 90 injured.
A woman in Kyiv described the attack, saying: “A missile flew in and made a hole in the neighbor’s residential complex. I saw an old grandmother die. I don’t understand why Trump has good relations with Putin, who is a murderer.”
Western media outlets have been reporting that the Trump administration presented a peace proposal to Ukraine, which includes potentially recognizing Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.
But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he has put forward a counter proposal during a press conference on a visit to Pretoria, South Africa.
The Ukrainian leader said: “After the United States’ proposal, other papers appeared and I believe that today this format, this document is on President Trump’s desk. Anything that contradicts our values or our constitution cannot be in any agreements.”
Attention is now focused on how the latest Russian attack will impact any negotiations.
