Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit the US on Friday, according to US President Donald Trump. According to reports, the two parties have reached an agreement on minerals.
Reporters questioned Trump on Tuesday about the status of the minerals agreement.
Zelenskyy is visiting the United States, the president retorted. “I hear that he is coming on Friday, and if he would like to sign it with me, that is definitely fine with me,” he said.
In exchange for Washington’s aid to Kyiv, Trump wants to reclaim the rights to Ukraine’s mineral resources.
According to the Financial Times and other Western media, the United States and Ukraine have reached a general agreement on a deal.
However, they say it is unclear if the explicit security guarantees Ukraine has repeatedly demanded will be included in the text.
Trump sent Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to Kyiv earlier this month to secure a deal. He expressed strong dissatisfaction when two sides failed to reach an agreement. Trump went so far as to call Zelenskyy a “dictator.”
Observers are waiting to see whether Trump and Zelenskyy will sign a deal and improve their relationship. This comes as steps are being taken to start negotiations aimed at bringing about a ceasefire in Ukraine.
