Trump not ruling out deploying ground troops to Iran

US media say the administration of US President Donald Trump is mulling the option of dispatching ground troops to Iran to secure the country’s highly enriched uranium.

NBC television reported on Friday that “Trump has discussed the idea of deploying ground troops with aides and Republican officials outside the White House while outlining his vision for a post-war Iran.”

US news website Axios said on Saturday that the US and Israel “discussed sending special forces into Iran to secure its stockpile of highly enriched uranium at a later stage of the war.”

Asked by a reporter on Saturday about deploying ground troops, Trump said, “We haven’t talked about it,” adding that “right now, we’re just decimating them.”

He also said, “We wouldn’t do it now. Maybe we do it later.”

The Trump administration has said one of the objectives of the military operation against Iran is to sever the country’s pathway to nuclear weapons.

Axios said the dispatch of ground troops “would likely only take place” if the US and Israel “are confident Iran’s military can no longer mount a serious threat to the forces involved.”
