Singapore Tourists Injured and dead in Finland Bus Collision

Several travellers from a Singapore tour group were slightly injured in Finland, when a bus they were travelling in collided with a minibus on Dec 19.

According to a report by Chinese-language news outlet Lianhe Zaobao, the bus was carrying 29 tourists from the Republic, who were on a 13-day tour with Chan Brothers travel agency. The accident happened at about 1pm local time (7pm Singapore time) in Rovaniemi, a popular tourist destination.

Two people – the minibus driver and a passenger – died at the scene, while a total of 37 people were taken to the hospital, of which 31 were from the tour bus. The Finnish police said the 37 people were mainly from Singapore and China.

According to Zaobao’s report, the tourists from Singapore – who started their tour on Dec 11 – were slightly injured and were not warded after they were checked at the hospital. The tourists then continued on for the remaining two days of their tour.

Finnish police said the minivan driver is suspected of traffic violations and negligent homicide and negligent injury at this stage of the investigation, according to AFP.

Finnish police said they were “in contact with the embassies of the countries concerned”.

While the cause of the accident had not been established, Finnish police said driving conditions were poor due to snowfall and snow on the road.
