Tottenham sign Japan defender Takai from Kawasaki Frontale.

Tottenham signed Japense international Kota Takai from Kawasaki Frontale on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year deal with the Europa League winners and will cost a reported fee of £5 million ($7 million), according to Sky Sports. The 20-year-old signs on a 5-year contract and becomes the first new face to arrive under new manager Thomas Frank, and Spurs’ third signing of the summer after the loans of Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel were made permanent.

With Tottenham hoping to improve on their disappointing 17th place finish in the Premier League last season, they will be hoping that Takai can add quality and bolster their defence ahead of next season.

Takai, who has earned 4 caps for Japan after making his debut against China in 2024, is clearly excited to have joined Tottenham, and he gave this statement to the clubs media team.

“Having arrived in London I’m full of excitement. My position is centre-back. I can play either side – right or left.

“I was born in Kanagawa, Japan. I’ve always played football since my childhood. The reason why I love football is because as a team we can improve our skills together.

“I’ve always watched the Premier League a lot, since I was little. At Spurs, my first aim is to be on the pitch for a match and do my best.”
