Tom Latham has been appointed New Zealand Test captain after Tim Southee stepped down following 22 months in the role.

Latham replaces Southee as new Test Captain – Southee has been in charge of the Black Caps’ red ball side for 14 matches since replacing Kane Williamson in December 2022. 22 months in the role. But the 35-year-old stepped down from the role “in the best interests of the team” after a 2-0 series defeat to Sri Lanka. Latham, who has captained New Zealand in nine previous Tests, will take on the role full-time, starting with a three-match series in India in October and November.
“To captain the Black Caps in a format that is so special to me has been an absolute honor and privilege,” Southee said of the team. “I think the best way to serve the team in the future is to focus on my performance on the field and get back to my best, keep taking wickets and help New Zealand win test matches. I want I wish Tom all the best in his role and know that I will be there to support him on his journey, as he has done for me over the years.
