Deep into extra time, Virgil van Dijk’s header handed an underdog Liverpool team a thrilling victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
After having his header controversially disallowed for offside on the hour mark, Van Dijk gave Chelsea no relief when, in the 118th minute, he glanced home another from Kostas Tsimikas’ corner.
Liverpool won the competition for the tenth time, but they did so without a number of star players who were injured, such as the forward trio of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Diogo Jota. Ryan Gravenberch was also substituted off the field on a stretcher following a challenge from Moises Caicedo in the first half.
