The Met Office says the “Weather Bomb” could cause gusts of up to 100 miles per hour along with heavy snow with blizzard-like conditions.

Snow is cleared from the A171 between Whitby and Scarborough in a snow blizzard. Bitterly cold weather is expected to grip the UK over the weekend with some places already seeing as much as 10cm of snow. Picture date: Saturday January 3, 2026. (Photo by Danny Lawson/PA Images via Getty Images)

Storm Goretti has arrived in the UK, bringing gusts of up to 100mph, as a rare red warning for “dangerous, stormy” winds was issued.

Winds of 98mph have already been recorded at St Mary’s Airport on the Isles of Scilly, which is a new record for the site, the Met Office said.

Goretti, the UK’s first named storm of 2026, is undergoing an “explosive deepening phase of cyclogenesis”, which forecasters warn will bring violent gusts to parts of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly over the next few hours, posing a potential danger to life.

The red warning is in place from 4pm to 11pm on Thursday, with gusts reaching 80 to 100mph across the area.

It applies to almost all of Cornwall, including the Isles of Scilly, but excluding South Eastern areas such as Launceston, Liskeard and Looe.
