The bodies that have decomposed are thought to be those of migrants whose boat overturned in Libyan waters earlier this week.

The bodies, according to Italy’s coastguard, were probably from a recent shipwreck involving migrants.

Six bodies were found on Sunday off the coast of Italy, according to local media. The bodies are thought to be those of migrants who went missing from a shipwreck.

The decaying corpses were found close to Sicily, an island off the southwest coast of the Italian mainland.

About 350 kilometers (217 miles) away, on the island of Lampedusa in Italy, the bodies were transferred.

According to Italian media, which cited officials, the bodies are thought to have been on board a boat that sank earlier this week in Libyan waters.

Seven male Syrian nationals were rescued by the Italian coastguard on Wednesday from a partially submerged boat southwest of Lampedusa.

The survivors informed the rescuers that they had departed from Libya on September 1st and that during severe weather, 21 out of the 28 passengers—including three children—had fallen into the sea.

“On Sunday afternoon, we departed from Sabrata, Libya,” an unidentified survivor informed Italian media.
