Afghanistan’s interim Taliban government said it had attacked multiple military bases in Pakistan on Saturday and killed 58 soldiers.
The Islamist group said that was in retaliation for the Pakistani military’s violation of Afghan airspace and air strikes on targets in the east of the country.
Pakistan meanwhile accused the Taliban and other militants of carrying out an unprovoked attack. It said its military had responded by targeting Taliban bases and terrorist training facilities, killing more than 200 members of the Taliban and other groups.
The fighting forced the closure of border crossings.
Pakistan claims that extremist groups have crossed the border to carry out terrorist attacks since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan four years ago.
The AP news agency reported that the Taliban administration said on Sunday that it had halted attacks at the request of Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said on Monday that Beijing was very concerned about the latest clashes. China shares a border with both countries.
