Witnesses told AFP that intense fighting shook a city in Sudan under paramilitary siege on Saturday, and US researchers reported that fighting in the state capital of North Darfur state had intensified and become unprecedented.
El-Fasher is one of five state capitals in the western Darfur region of Sudan, and the only one that is not ruled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have been battling the regular army since April 2023.
The UN estimates that the fighting has caused millions of people to be displaced throughout most of Sudan, and that starvation is currently occurring at an internally displaced camp near El-Fasher.
El-Fasher has been under RSF siege since May, and Darfur has seen some of the worst atrocities of the war.
“The neighborhoods are completely deserted, and all you can hear are explosions and missiles,”
