A deadly stampede at New Delhi’s main railway station on Saturday evening resulted in the deaths of at least 15 people, according to authorities.
The incident occurred as large crowds gathered to board trains heading to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering. Panic broke out on two platforms around 8 p.m. local time (1430 GMT), leading to the tragic crush.
Dr. Ritu Saxena, deputy medical superintendent at Lok Nayak Hospital in New Delhi, confirmed the fatalities, stating that most victims likely died from hypoxia or blunt injuries. Autopsies are being conducted to determine the exact causes of death.
Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his grief over the incident in a post on X, calling it deeply saddening. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his distress, offering prayers for the injured and assuring that authorities are providing assistance to those affected.
The tragedy has drawn widespread attention as officials work to address the aftermath and prevent similar incidents in the future.
