Arsenal overcame a deficit to beat Southampton at the Emirates Stadium and maintain their perfect start to the season. Two goals in 10 second-half minutes from Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli saw the Gunners fully recover after being surprised by Cameron Archer’s opener for the visitors, before Bukayo Saka confirmed the three points late on. Arsenal became the second club in Premier League history to record 400 home wins and remain a point behind Premier League leaders Liverpool ahead of the international break. Southampton, who still have just one point after seven games, struggled to cope with Arsenal’s relentless pressure from the start but, although unconvincing at times, the visitors held on until the end. Saints took the lead 10 minutes after the restart thanks to a fine finish from Archer on a counter-attack after Raheem Sterling, making his first league appearance for the Gunners, was teed up by Mateus Fernandes. But that only revived Arsenal, who responded three minutes later when Havertz shot perfectly onto the post, before Martinelli timed his run perfectly to turn Saka’s cross into the back post. With Arsenal unable to put the game out of reach, Southampton mounted a fiery response but were twice denied by the posts when Dibling’s shot deflected off the post and Adam Armstrong hit the crossbar in the resulting corner. But Saka, the scorer of his side’s first two goals, scored the third in the dying minutes with a clinical finish, allowing Arsenal to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to 16 games.
