South Korea’s political crisis continues to deepen following President Yoon Suk-yeol’s brief declaration of martial law. Yonhap News Agency reports that prosecutors are seeking to arrest the country’s former defense minister for his alleged role.
Kim Yong-hyun is being accused of treason. He is said to have advised Yoon to declare martial law last week, and he was detained on Sunday. A court is expected to hold a hearing Tuesday to decide whether to grant prosecutors an arrest warrant.
Yonhap reports the investigation will likely be extended to the president.
Members of the ruling People Power Party have been holding several meetings to address the fallout. They are reportedly discussing what the government could look like without Yoon’s involvement.
Yoon survived an impeachment vote led by the main opposition Democratic Party last week. The party is planning to submit a new impeachment motion with a vote aimed for Saturday.
