South Korean media outlets report that Han Hak-ja, the leader of a religious group previously known as the Unification Church, was arrested early on Tuesday after prosecutors secured an arrest warrant.

The special team of prosecutors accuses Han of taking part in an alleged bribery case involving Kim Keon-hee, the wife of former President Yoon Suk-yeol.

Kim is alleged to have received luxury brand bags from a former senior official of the religious group through an acquaintance.

The news of Han’s arrest broke before dawn on Tuesday, after the prosecutors revealed that a district court in Seoul approved the arrest warrant they had requested, saying she poses a risk of destroying evidence.

The previous day, the court held a hearing to determine whether to approve the prosecutors’ request. Han reportedly denied the allegations.

The prosecutors suspect the alleged bribery case may have been an attempt by the religious group to get close to the circle of former President Yoon in order to expand its influence.
