South Korea says it has discovered North Korea’s preparations to bypass parts of inter-Korean roads. Tensions between the two countries have risen in recent weeks.
The move would be a major change since North Korea has for decades maintained that it is seeking unification with the South.
“They have set up screens in the streets and are working behind these screens, preparing to storm the streets,” Lee Sung Joon, a spokesman for South Korea’s chiefs of staff, told reporters.
He said the operation could happen on Monday.
The move comes after weeks of rising tensions on the Korean peninsula. North Korea has three times accused South Korea of using drones to drop propaganda leaflets on its territory and has threatened to retaliate with force if it happens again.
