In a brief statement, the Vatican announced that the pope’s respiratory infection requires a new course of treatment. The infection has kept him hospitalized longer than a 2023 battle with pneumonia.

Pope Francis is in a “complex clinical situation” and will be staying in Rome’s Gemelli hospital for the time being, the Vatican confirmed Monday.
According to a brief statement from the Holy See, “the results of the tests carried out in recent days and today have demonstrated a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract,” and the problem necessitated “an appropriate hospital stay.”
The 88-year-old Francis has already had to postpone many appointments because of his illness, which has kept him in the hospital longer than a 2023 pneumonia episode.
“In good spirits,” the Pope
A day after a post on Francis’ official X account thanked the faithful for their “affection, prayer and closeness with which you are accompanying me in these days,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pope was “in good spirits.”
His condition was described as “stable” on Sunday, according to Italian broadcaster Mediaset, and he had phone conversations with Gaza’s Catholic community.
John Paul II, who died in 2005 at the age of 84, was the last pope to die while in office. After being criticized for years for ignoring the pope’s battle with Parkinson’s disease, the Vatican announced the pope’s illness at the time.
