What we know
Authorities tonight detained a person for questioning in the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, a person familiar with the matter told NBC News.
The FBI released security photos and videos of a potential subject in the investigation into the disappearance of “TODAY” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother.
Four images depict a person wearing gloves, a mask and a backpack appearing to tamper with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning she disappeared.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the potential subject is armed.
The FBI said yesterday that it had not identified any suspects or persons of interest.
Guthrie, 84, was dropped off at her home outside Tucson, Arizona, the night of Jan. 31 and was reported missing about noon Feb. 1.
The FBI said yesterday that it is “not aware of any continued communication between the Guthrie family and suspected kidnappers.”
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said the individual was detained during a traffic stop south of Tucson on Tuesday.
KOLD confirmed the traffic stop took place in Rio Rico, approximately 12 miles north of the Mexico border.
That person has not been charged.
The potential break in the case was one of the latest developments Tuesday to come during the second week in the search for Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” host Savannah Guthrie.

Inside the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance
Earlier on Tuesday, federal investigators released images of an armed individual seen tampering with the camera on Nancy Guthrie’s front door.
The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department worked with other groups to recover the images and video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s camera because the files were lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors.
It’s not clear at this time if the person seen in the images shared by the FBI is the same individual who was reportedly detained Tuesday night.
FBI Director Kash Patel posted the images on X, saying, “The video was recovered from residual data located in backend systems.” (Source: LNL)
Activity with the Bitcoin account associated with a purported ransom note linked to Nancy Guthrie’s abduction was also detected on Tuesday, just hours before confirmation from the sheriff that a person was detained.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her Tucson-area home on Jan. 31. The 84-year-old who suffers from health and mobility issues was reported missing the following day after she failed to show up for church.
Savannah Guthrie said Tuesday in a message online that her family does “believe she is still alive.”
The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery or the conviction of anyone involved.
