Passenger ordered to pay thousands of dollars in fuel costs after bad behavior diverts flight

Following his disruptive behavior that caused a flight to be diverted last year, an Australian man has been hit with thousands of dollars in fines and fuel charges.

The 33-year-old man began acting strangely on Sept. 25, 2023, while traveling from Perth to Sydney, according to a news release from the Australian Federal Police. He was not named. Police stated that his actions “caused the flight to return to Perth,” but they did not elaborate on how he was interfering with the aircraft.

The pilot had to dump fuel before landing as a result of the early return, and the remaining passengers had to be rearranged for a later flight.

Following the flight’s landing, the Australian Federal Police detained the man and charged him with one count of acting in an unruly manner on an aircraft and one count of disobeying safety instructions.

Last week, he entered a guilty plea to the charges.

A $9,000 Australian dollar fine (roughly $6,00) was imposed on him.
