Pakistan’s top leaders congratulate General Syed Asim Munir on promotion to Field Marshal.The federal government on Tuesday promoted Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir to the rank of field marshal for ensuring Pakistan’s defence and defeating the enemy through his courageous leadership and exceptional strategy during Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos.
The rank of field marshal is the highest rank of armies built on the pattern of the British Army. It has only been awarded to one other — General Mohammad Ayub Khan — by the presidential cabinet in 1959. It is a ceremonial five-star rank that usually signifies extraordinary leadership and wartime achievement.
The decision was made during a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.The cabinet recounted that on the night of 6 and 7 May 2025, India launched an “unprovoked and unjustified” assault on Pakistan, targeting civilian areas, including women and children.
