German prosecutors announced Thursday that a suspect had been arrested in connection with an alleged 2022 attack on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which transported Russian gas to Europe.

The suspect, a Ukrainian national, was detained near Rimini, Italy, prosecutors said. In a statement, they thanked their Italian counterparts and other international law enforcement agencies for their assistance.

Authorities said the individual, identified only as Serhii K. in accordance with German privacy laws, was part of a group that planted explosives on the pipelines and is believed to have helped coordinate the attack.

Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig praised the “impressive success” that led to the overnight arrest, calling for the case to proceed until all the suspects had been detained.

Danish authorities detected a series of underwater explosions on Sept. 26, 2022, near Nord Stream infrastructure. The suspected sabotage and resulting gas leaks rendered three pipelines inoperable.

Controversial even before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the pipelines became more so after Moscow launched its full-scale war in Ukraine in February 2022. At the time of the attack, the pipelines were filled with gas but not operational, as part of early sanctions against the Russian government.

India test-fires nuclear-capable ballistic missile

NEW DELHI: India said on Wednesday (Aug 20) that it had successfully test-fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile which, when operational, should be capable of carrying a nuclear warhead to any part of China.

The Agni-5 missile was successfully launched in India’s eastern Odisha state, with authorities saying it “validated all operational and technical parameters”. India and China, the world’s two most populous nations, are intense rivals competing for influence across South Asia, and relations plummeted in 2020 after a deadly border clash.

India is also part of the Quad security alliance with the United States, Australia and Japan, which is seen as a counter to China. India’s bitter rival Pakistan has nuclear weapons as well, and the two countries came close to war in May after militants killed 26 people in Indian-administered Kashmir, an attack New Delhi blamed on Islamabad. But Pakistan denied any involvement.

Caught in global trade and geopolitical turbulence triggered by US President Donald Trump’s tariff war, Delhi and Beijing have moved to mend ties.

Last October, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping for the first time in five years at a summit in Russia.

Modi is expected to make his first visit to China since 2018 later this month to attend the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation – a regional security bloc.

Ties between New Delhi and Washington, meanwhile, have been strained by Trump’s ultimatum that India end its purchases of Russian oil, a key source of revenue for Moscow as it wages its military offensive in Ukraine.

The United States says it will double new import tariffs on India from 25 per cent to 50 per cent by Aug 27 if New Delhi does not switch crude suppliers.

The Agni-5 is one of a number of indigenously produced short- and medium-range Indian ballistic missiles aimed at boosting its defence posture against Pakistan, as well as China.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has announced sanctions on four more officials at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

The US State Department said on Wednesday it will impose sanctions on two judges and two prosecutors, including freezing their assets in the United States.

Last November, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.

The US department said three of the four officials were designated for ruling to authorize the ICC’s issuance of the arrest warrants or for upholding them.

The fourth was sanctioned for a ruling to authorize the ICC’s investigation into US personnel in Afghanistan.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized the court in a statement, describing it as “a national security threat that has been an instrument for lawfare against the United States and our close ally Israel.”

In February, Trump signed an executive order authorizing sanctions against the ICC. The State Department announced sanctions on four ICC judges in June.

The ICC has 125 members, including Japan and Palestine, but not the United States or Israel. Japanese judge Akane Tomoko is the court’s president.

BBC wrong not to call Hamas terrorists, says former head of news

The BBC triggered outrage and accusations of anti-Semitism after it refused to use the term “terrorist” to describe the gunmen who massacred more than 1,000 people and took hundreds hostage in the worst loss of Jewish life since the Holocaust.

It instead describes them as militants and states that Hamas is proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the UK, Israel and others.

New Zealand’s intelligence agency on Thursday warned the country faces its toughest security challenges in decades, citing growing foreign interference and espionage, with China singled out as the “most active” actor.

The Security Intelligence Service (SIS) said in its annual threat report that New Zealand has been targeted by countries including China, Russia and Iran, which “are willing to engage in covert or deceptive activity to influence discussions and decisions, or gain access to technology and information that can help them meet these goals.”

Beijing rejected the findings as “unsubstantiated and groundless,” accusing Wellington of adopting a “Cold War mentality.”rly ‘assertive and powerful’ actor. Beijing dismissed the ‘groundless’ claims as adoption of a ‘Cold War mentality.

Lavrov Says Ukraine Security Talks ‘Road to Nowhere’ Without Russian Involvement – The Moscow Times”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters on Wednesday that any discussions of Western security guarantees for Ukraine that do not include Moscow would be “a road to nowhere” and fail to address what Moscow refers to as the “root causes” of the war.

“I am confident that in the West, and especially in the U.S., they fully understand that seriously discussing security guarantees without involving Russia is a utopia — a road to nowhere,” Lavrov said, noting defiantly that Russia has no plans to back down from “defending its legitimate interests.”

His remarks came as top military brass from NATO’s 32 member states held a virtual meeting on Wednesday to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine as part of a possible peace agreement between Kyiv and Moscow.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who held a high-stakes summit with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Monday, claimed Russia’s Vladimir Putin was ready to accept some kind of guarantees for Ukraine.

Attention is now shifting to what concrete commitments Ukraine’s Western allies are prepared to make to ensure the country’s security after the war, amid fears Russia could strike again. Trump has suggested U.S. support could include air defense, but he ruled out sending American troops.

French and British troop deployments have resurfaced in discussions, though London already appears to be wavering on the issue, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Tuesday calling it “premature” to talk about putting British forces on the front line

Italian PM Meloni to visit Japan in early Sept

0

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will make a two-day visit to Japan from Sept 7, according to her government, with her itinerary expected to include talks with her Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba and a visit to the World Exposition in Osaka.

The trip, however, could be postponed if there are developments in Russia-Ukraine summit talks being arranged by U.S. President Donald Trump with the goal of ending Russia’s invasion, according to Italy’s ANSA news agency.

Meloni’s visit to Japan will be part of a wider trip in Asia starting later this month, which will also take her to South Korea and Vietnam, among other countries.

At their meeting, Ishiba and Meloni are expected to affirm their nations’ shared goal of bringing an end to the war in Ukraine. They will also likely discuss their countries’ response to China’s maritime assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.

Italy has become increasingly engaged in the Indo-Pacific region in recent years, with its Navy aircraft carrier Cavour making its first port call in Japan last August. Japan and Italy are also working with Britain on a joint project to develop fighter jets.

Meloni’s visit to the expo site in Osaka will come just days ahead of Italy’s “national day” at the event on Sept. 12.
