One of the most popular destinations for migrants to enter the European Union is Greece.
Authorities in Greece reported that a small boat carrying migrants from neighboring Turkey sank in the eastern Aegean Sea off the island of Samos on Monday, killing at least four people.
Three women’s and a girl’s bodies were discovered in the water, according to the coast guard, while five more migrants were saved from the water and another twenty-six who reached the shore safely were later discovered on land.
Survivors said there was a chance some people were still missing, so a massive air, land, and sea search and rescue operation was started. According to officials, the operation was hindered by the high winds in the area.
The cause of the boat’s sinking—which was initially thought to be a tiny dinghy—was unknown. Additionally, there was no immediate information available regarding the nationalities or identities of the deceased and survivors.
