The New York Times has quoted multiple sources as saying US President Donald Trump no longer has plans to visit India later this year for a summit of the Quad nations, which also include Japan and Australia.
The report on Saturday linked the souring ties to the exchanges Trump had with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May that followed military clashes between the two nations.
Trump asserted he had resolved the conflict and suggested India nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Modi reportedly maintained that the US involvement had nothing to do with the ceasefire.
The Trump administration has raised additional tariffs on imports from India to 50 percent, citing the country’s purchases of crude oil and petroleum products from Russia. The move is raising concerns about a further deterioration of bilateral ties.
Modi is currently visiting China for the first time in seven years to attend the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin
