Following a suspected chemical leak at a swimming pool in Wembley, northwest London, nine children and two adults are being treated in a hospital.
A chlorine leak was reported at the Vale Farm Sports Centre on Watford Road shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, prompting the call of police, paramedics, and the fire department.
Road closures are in effect, and the leisure center has been evacuated, according to the Met police.
“We sent a number of resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, incident response officers, and members of our hazardous area response team,” a London Ambulance Service spokesperson stated.
“We treated two adults and nine children on the scene, and then we transported them all to the hospital.”
Emergency personnel are still on site.
Everyone Active’s area contract manager, Chris Williams, stated: “Today at 1:40 pm, the center was evacuated due to an excess of chlorine that was accidentally released into the pool.
“As a precaution, a few customers were sent to the hospital; no coworkers were hurt. Although the incident was limited to the pool area, we decided to take precautions and close the entire building.
“Our first concern is safety, and we are treating this incident with extreme gravity. We are looking into the root of the problem in-depth, and we will take the appropriate action to stop it from happening again.
“We reopened the center at 4 p.m. today, and tomorrow (Friday) at 6.30 a.m., we plan to reopen the pool, subject to extensive safety inspections. We will provide an update as soon as we can and truly apologize to all impacted customers.
Councillor Neil Nerva, Cabinet Member for Community Health & Wellbeing at Brent Council, said: “We are aware of reports of a chlorine leak at Vale Farm Sports Centre and that nine children and two adults have been taken to hospital.
“Everyone Active manages Vale Farm Sports Centre and we are seeking reassurance from them. We are on hand to support in any way we can.”
