Next year, Wimbledon will be played without linesmen for the first time in the tournament’s 147-year history, after the decision was made to use artificial intelligence. Well-dressed linesmen are a famous part of tradition at Wimbledon, but they are being replaced by Live Electronic Line Calling (ELC). This technology will be in effect for all tournaments and qualifying matches early next year, covering wrong calls that were previously made by linesmen. The system is already used in several tennis tournaments and was first adopted for a Grand Slam for the US Open in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out. It has been used more frequently since then, and the men’s ATP Tour announced last year that it will be used in place of the lines until 2025 in all its regular events.
