Fourteen people died and 16 were injured after a bus carrying dozens of pilgrims from India plunged into a river in Nepal, authorities said Friday.
It was the second bus accident in that region of the Asian nation in as many months, and it occurred in the midst of the monsoon season.
The bus was traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu, the capital, when it veered off the highway. Gorakhpur, a nearby Indian town near the Nepalese border, was the origin of the bus.
The incident took place close to Abukhaireni, a town located approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of Kathmandu, on the Prithvi highway.
The bus rolled away from the highway and toward the Marsyangdi River, which was moving quickly, before coming to a stop on the rocky bank, according to the Associated Press. The bus’s top had been ripped apart.
