The conflict that erupted on February 28 after coordinated attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran has continued to expand across the region, with incidents now reported in several West Asian countries. Since the start of the fighting, clashes and strikes have spread to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq and Kuwait.

Preliminary estimates cited by Al Jazeera indicate that around 1,332 people have been killed in Iran so far, while at least 11 people have died in Israel. The conflict has also claimed the lives of six US soldiers and nine people in Gulf countries.

Iranian strikes hit Bahrain’s Al Ma’ameer oil facility, causing a fire and damage, after which state energy firm Bapco declared force majeure following attacks on key installations. Saudi Arabia said it intercepted a drone targeting the Shaybah oil field, while condemning Iran’s retaliatory strikes as “reprehensible”.

Bahrain’s health ministry reported that an Iranian drone attack on Sitra island injured 32 civilians. Human Rights Watch also accused Israel of “unlawfully” using white phosphorus over residential areas of the Lebanese town of Yohmor last week.

Iran and Israel continued exchanging fire, with Tehran launching missiles toward Israel after the appointment of its new supreme leader. Israel said it struck “regime infrastructure”, including security command centres and missile launch sites in central Iran.

Meanwhile, several Gulf countries reported fresh attacks, with explosions heard in Doha as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait activated air defences.
