Early Life and Background

Lorenzo Musetti, born on 3 March 2002 in Carrara, Tuscany, is an Italian professional tennis player. He achieved a career-high singles ATP ranking of World No. 15 on 26 June 2023 and reached a doubles ranking of No. 142 on 1 April 2024. Currently, Musetti is the No. 2 Italian tennis player and has secured two ATP Tour singles titles. In 2024, he marked his best career performance at a major by reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon and winning a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.

Musetti has also claimed two titles on the ATP Challenger Tour and two on the ITF World Tennis Tour. His father, Francesco Musetti, works in a marble quarry, while his mother, Sabrina Ratti, is a secretary. His older sister, Valentina, was a tennis player and is now married to fellow tennis player Gianluca Mager. Musetti began playing tennis at the age of four and has been coached by Simone Tartarini since childhood. His tennis idol growing up was Roger Federer.

Junior Tennis Achievements

Musetti reached a career-high ITF juniors ranking of World No. 1 on 10 June 2019. He was a finalist at the 2018 US Open boys’ singles and triumphed at the 2019 Australian Open boys’ singles title by defeating Emilio Nava in the final.

2020: Introduction to the ATP Tour

Musetti made his ATP Tour main draw debut in February 2020 at the Dubai Tennis Championships after receiving a wildcard and passing the qualifying rounds. At the age of 17, he faced Andrey Rublev in the first round but lost. His second tour-level match and first on a Masters 1000 level came at the Italian Open, where he defeated three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka and former World No. 4 Kei Nishikori. He became the first player born in 2002 to win an ATP match. In October, he reached his first ATP semifinal at the Forte Village Sardegna Open but retired due to injury.

2021: Breakthrough into the Top 100 and Grand Slam Milestones

Musetti became the youngest player to break into the top 100 by reaching the semifinals of the ATP Tour 500 Mexican Open in March 2021. He secured his first top 10 win against Diego Schwartzman and reached his second ATP semifinal at a 500 level before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Musetti also reached the semifinals at the Lyon Open in May and the fourth round at the French Open on his Grand Slam debut. Despite a strong start, leading top seed Novak Djokovic by two sets, Musetti retired in the fifth set. He finished the season by participating in the Next Generation ATP Finals.

2022: First ATP Titles and Entry into the Top 25

In 2022, Musetti started strong by reaching the quarterfinals at the Rotterdam Open and the semifinals at the Hamburg European Open, where he won his first ATP title by defeating World No. 6 Carlos Alcaraz. This victory marked his entry into the top 50, and he reached a career-high ranking of No. 23 in October. Musetti also made his top 30 debut and had a solid run at the US Open, reaching the third round. He ended the season with another title at the Tennis Napoli Cup and a quarterfinal finish at the Paris Masters.

2023: Rise to Top 15 and Davis Cup Victory

At the start of 2023, Musetti helped Italy reach the final of the United Cup and achieved a career-high ranking of No. 18. Although he faced early exits at several tournaments, he made a strong comeback at the Monte-Carlo Masters, defeating World No. 1 Novak Djokovic to reach the quarterfinals. Musetti reached two grass court quarterfinals before making it to the third round at Wimbledon. He played a key role in Italy’s Davis Cup victory, marking their first win since 1976.

2024: Significant Career Milestones and Olympic Success

In 2024, Musetti recorded his first win at the Australian Open and reached the fourth round in Miami. He achieved his 100th career win at the Monte-Carlo Masters and reached his first Major semifinal at Wimbledon, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. Musetti also reached the final at the Croatia Open Umag and made history by becoming the first Italian tennis player in 100 years to win an Olympic medal, securing bronze at the Paris Olympics.
