Lauren James’ goal in stoppage time gave Chelsea a 2-1 victory over Everton at home on Sunday, extending their lead at the top of the Women’s Super League. The Blues rallied from a goal deficit to win all three points.
Chelsea leads the league with 40 points, followed by Manchester United in second place with 33 following a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace, and Arsenal in third place with three points less after thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 in the North London derby.
Six minutes after halftime, Everton took a surprising lead at Kingsmeadow after a goalless first half. Kelly Gago took Chelsea keeper Hannah Hampton by surprise, whipping a shot across her and in at the far post from a challenging angle.
Sandy Baltimore won the ball back on the right, and it went to Mayra Ramirez via Johanna Rytting Kaneryd. The Colombian then rattled it home to tie the score in the 62nd minute, so Sonia Bompastor’s team was not far behind.
Chelsea applied constant pressure, and three minutes into stoppage time, James fired a drive in at the foot of the far post after substitute Aggie Beever-Jones struck the crossbar with a header and blazed a shot just wide.
Fourth place When Manchester City hosts Liverpool in Sunday’s late kickoff, they will be looking to maintain their waning title hopes.
