Kylian Mbappé denies rape allegations in Sweden
The Real Madrid star has furiously denied reports in Sweden that he is the unidentified man in a rape investigation. He also seems to have linked this information to his ongoing salary dispute with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain.
French soccer star Kylian Mbappé has reacted angrily to reports in Sweden that he is the subject of a rape investigation that Swedish prosecutors opened on Tuesday.
Mbappe’s name has not been released by authorities, but Swedish media, including newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen, as well as public broadcaster SVT, all reported on Tuesday that the 25-year-old Real Madrid forward was the target of an investigation after a night out in Stockholm last week. “In response to media reports of a suspected rape in Stockholm, the prosecutor can confirm that a criminal complaint has been filed with the police,” the Swedish prosecutor’s office said in a statement, adding that the The alleged incident took place in a hotel on October 10.
Citing anonymous sources, Expressen said Mbappé was “reasonably suspected” of rape and sexual assault, the lower of two levels of suspicion in the Swedish legal system.
Aftonbladet and SVT supported the report, which Mbappé’s representatives categorically denied.
“Today, a new defamatory rumor is starting to spread online from the Swedish media,” they said in a statement to the French news agency AFP. “These accusations are completely false and irresponsible, and their dissemination is unacceptable.”
The statement added that “all necessary legal measures will be taken to restore the truth.”
