The suspect in the stabbing attack case can now be named as Axel Rudakubana after a ruling from the judge in court.
After hearing submissions, Judge Andrew Menary KC declined to make an order to conceal his identity.
Rudakubana, who turns 18 in six days, has now been remanded in youth custody.
Reporting from outside the court, crime correspondent Martin Brunt says the judge listened to legal arguments for 20 minutes before ruling that Rudakubana’s identity could be revealed.
“It is unusual because, strictly speaking, under the law, anybody who is younger than 18 has the protection of the law and can’t be named,” says Brunt.
“So from the moment we knew that a 17-year-old had been arrested as the suspect – even though eventually, we worked out his identity – we were still prevented from naming him.
He added: “It’s a rare thing, but clearly the judge has been persuaded by the legal arguments.”Two children discharged from hospital
Two of the children injured in Monday’s stabbing attack have been discharged from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
Five other children are still being treated, including one recently transferred from Aintree University Hospital.
Alder Hey said in a statement: “All the children in our care are currently in a stable condition. Our heartfelt sympathies remain with all those affected by Monday’s incident.”
