Khadija Shaw scored the winner in injury time for Manchester City, who beat Liverpool at Anfield to go top of the Women’s Super League.
It was a troubled afternoon for City on Merseyside before Shaw canceled out Olivia Smith’s first-half goal and then hit the post with minutes remaining.
The Jamaican striker finally found the winner in the second minute of stoppage time, firing powerfully past goalkeeper Rachael Laws and inflicting a heavy blow on the hosts.
Liverpool, who were without manager Matt Beard through illness, looked poised to hold on for a draw after a strong first half but crumbled under pressure from City.
Liverpool endured an injury-plagued afternoon, with goalkeeper Laws struggling in the second half playmaker Smith and key centre-back Gemma Bonner forced off the field. But City, who were also without Vivianne Miedema and Naomi Layzell, persevered and were rewarded as they were rewarded for a tough second half.
The result capped off a fine week for the visitors, who stunned European champions Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday.
