US President is scheduled to visit Germany this week, according to government sources in Berlin. The visit follows the cancellation of a planned trip last week due to Hurricane Milton. Biden is expected to meet with Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday to discuss key global issues, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Although the original trip was planned to coincide with a summit of the Ramstein Group—nations providing military aid to Ukraine—that meeting has been delayed. The summit was set to take place at the US airbase in Ramstein to explore new aid commitments for Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was also expected to attend, unveiling his “victory plan.”
After the summit’s postponement, Zelenskyy embarked on a tour of European capitals to secure continued support for Ukraine. During a meeting in Berlin, Scholz pledged €1.4 billion in military aid to Ukraine through the end of 2024, reinforcing Western commitment to Kyiv. This aid package, supported by partners such as Belgium, Denmark, and Norway, includes air defenses, tanks, drones, and artillery.
Biden’s visit marks his first bilateral trip to Germany as president, after attending the G7 summit at Elmau Castle in Bavaria in 2022. Although initial plans included a visit to Angola, the itinerary has been revised as Biden faces time constraints ahead of the upcoming US presidential election. The White House emphasized that there is limited time left in his presidency to reschedule key international engagements.
