Japan issued a tsunami warning for people living in the Izu and Ogasawara Islands on Tuesday in response to an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 that occurred in the Pacific Ocean near the uninhabited island of Torishima.

No major tremor has been observed, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said after the quake struck along the island chain in the ocean around 600 kilometers (370 miles) south of Tokyo.

About 40 minutes after the earthquake, a 50 cm tsunami hit Hachijo island, one of the Izu Islands, according to the JMA.

The Izu and Ogasawara Islands could be hit by a tsunami as high as one meter, the agency warned.

As of yet, there have been no reports of significant harm.
