A fire at an Istanbul nightclub has killed at least 27 people, the city governor’s office has said.
The blaze broke out during renovation work at the site on Tuesday and several people have been detained for questioning.
The governor’s office said the fire started in the Besiktas district in central Istanbul on the European side of the city, and that all of the victims were construction workers.
At least eight people were injured, seven of them hospitalized in serious condition, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.The Masquerade nightclub, which was closed at the time for the renovation work, was on the ground floor of a 16-story residential building in the Besiktas district on the European side of the city bisected by the Bosphorus.
