After winning the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership race on Friday, Shigeru Ishiba, Japan’s former defense minister, is expected to take over as the country’s prime minister.

The seasoned politician prevailed over Sanae Takaichi, an uncommonly well-known woman in Japanese politics, in a head-to-head vote.

Following Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s announcement in August that he would not seek reelection, the vote has taken place.

Having a majority in parliament, the LDP, which has ruled Japan for nearly all of the post-war era, chooses the prime ministers.
