After the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the conflict widened overnight, with fresh strikes and counterstrikes in Iran and across the Middle East.

Israel and Hezbollah clash in Lebanon
Israel carried out a heavy round of airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, targeting areas controlled by Hezbollah after the Iran-backed group launched missiles and drones towards Israel.

A senior Hezbollah operative was struck, according to the Israeli military.

US expands strikes inside Iran
The US said it hit hundreds of targets across Iran and destroyed the headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the elite force tasked with protecting the Islamic Republic.

The Iran Red Crescent’s last published toll said at least 555 people had been killed in Israeli and US strikes.

Iran retaliates across the region
In Israel, at least nine people were killed in the central city of Beit Shemesh, with additional injuries reported near Tel Aviv and on a main road in Jerusalem.

Strikes were also reported in Gulf states. Oman said two drones hit the commercial port of Duqm, injuring a foreign worker.

An Indian national was killed after an attack on an oil tanker off Muscat, which had caused an explosion and a fire.

Three ships were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. Disruptions in the strategic waterway sent oil prices sharply higher.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed to have struck the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, although the Pentagon said the missiles “didn’t even come close”.

Trump vows to avenge US deaths
President Donald Trump vowed to avenge the first US deaths in the conflict, after the Pentagon confirmed three American service members were killed and five seriously wounded. US Central Command later confirmed a fourth death.

Trump has indicated that the bombing campaign may continue for four weeks.

Six Gulf states and the US jointly condemn Iran’s attacks
Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, the UAE and the US, in a joint statement, said that Iran’s “reckless and provocative attacks” represent a “dangerous escalation” that threatens the stability of the Middle East.

Noting Tehran’s retaliatory strikes across the region via drones and missiles in response to attacks by Tel Aviv and Washington, the nations reaffirmed their right to self-defence.
