More than 10,000 people have died in the conflicts led by the Naxalite movement
Police in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh said on Friday that security forces had shot dead 28 suspected Maoist rebels in a shootout.
The battle came days after the country’s interior minister warned insurgents to surrender or face an “all-out” attack.
Police were conducting a search on the border of Narayanpur and Dantewada districts when fighting broke out in Abujhmad forest, a remote and sparsely populated area.
A member of the Indian security forces was slightly injured in the battle, the AFP news agency said, citing Narayanpur district police chief Prabhat Kumar. He told the agency that the joint operation involved the police and other branches of the Indian security forces and was still ongoing.
