India post 587 in first innings of second England test –

India were dismissed for a commanding total of 587 in the first innings on the back of skipper Shubman Gill’s record-breaking knock of 269 on day two of the second test at Edgbaston on Thursday.Shubman Gill was in imperious form, and was eyeing 600 at the tea break. But a exhaustion got to him as Josh Tongue removed him for 269 off 387 balls. Unlike the first Test, India’s lower middle order showed better character, and assisted Gill, as he ran havoc. Gill’s knock also the highest score by an Indian batter in England. Gill got decent support from Washington Sundar in the second session, until the all-rounder played down the wrong line to Joe Root to get bowled. Meanwhile, England kept up wih their short-ball tactic and even used Harry Brook, but it didn’t break Gill’s momentum. Gill got his maiden double hundred in the post-Lunch session. The first session belonged to the hosts as Gill also ended it unbeaten and also with his highest score, smacking 168* off 288 balls. Meanwhile, even Washington Sundar managed to survive after adding a run. For England, Josh Tongue struck once, removing Ravindra Jadeja (89). He unsettled the veteran with a stunning bouncer, and also threatened Sundar as well, in the few minutes leading upto Lunch as India reached 419/6 in the first session. Before Jadeja’s dismissal, England bowlers were running out of ideas as the all-rounder and Gill brought up their 200-run stand with ease, and it also took India’s total past 400. Gill looks calm and is in control, despite Carse’s short ball tactics, or Bashir’s spin.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Ravindra Jadeja (89) missed out on tons while Gill was involved in two century stands, including a crucial 203-run partnership with Jadeja.
